Operational Stoppage
Mechanical blockages on automated packaging lines halt the rapid feeding, erecting, filling or closing of folding carton blanks. Occurrences of high-speed cartoning jamming arise when dimensional variations, altered friction values or inadequate crease stiffness prevent smooth paperboard transport. Modern cartoning equipment operating above four hundred units per minute requires exact physical substrate properties.
Manual packing operations and low-speed hand-fed lines fall outside the operating parameters of this operational failure mode.
Mechanical Interruption
Blank feeding systems rely on vacuum suction cups to pull flat folding boxboard from a hopper into transport lugs. Inconsistent coefficient of friction causes double-feeding when two blanks stick together, or misfeeding when the cup slides across the board surface. Incorrect crease score stiffness prevents mechanical swords from opening the carton square, causing incoming product loads to collide with folded flaps.
Web moisture changes warp the paperboard profile, creating misalignments inside high-speed transport tracks. The resulting machine sensors detect the blockage and trigger instant emergency stops to prevent equipment damage.
Material Tolerance
Strict paperboard specifications dictate tight limits for moisture content, bending stiffness and surface smoothness. Converting plants test board batches on crease stiffness testers to verify that box folding forces remain within operating machinery tolerances.
