Continuous Measurement
Real-time monitoring of substrate thickness during production allows for immediate detection of variation on the web. Using in-line micro-gauge tracking enables converters to measure the caliper of the paperboard or plastic film as it speeds through the press. This automated process replaces manual micrometer checks and ensures consistent material thickness across the entire roll.
Sensor Technology
Non-contact sensors measure the distance from the sensor face to the web surface using optical or electromagnetic technologies. As the web passes beneath the sensor, any change in material thickness is recorded and displayed on the control console. If the thickness deviates from the specified tolerance, the system alerts the operator or automatically adjusts the press parameters to compensate for the change.
This instant feedback loop prevents entire rolls of paperboard from being processed with the wrong thickness, which would otherwise result in catastrophic failure during subsequent high-speed converting.
Process Efficiency
Immediate feedback on substrate thickness allows operators to catch defects before large quantities of material are wasted. This continuous data stream is used to generate quality reports for the customer and to identify trends that may indicate a problem with the raw material supply. By maintaining a highly consistent thickness, converters can ensure that subsequent processes like die-cutting and folding run smoothly.
