Standard Specification
International standardized testing governs the determination of ball burst strength in tissue paper and tissue products. Paper testing laboratories execute iso 12625-9 to measure the mechanical resistance of wet or dry tissue sheets to penetration by a polished steel ball. The standard specifies mechanical geometry, clamping force and penetration speed required to achieve reproducible burst resistance values.
Test Procedure
A circular specimen is clamped securely between two concentric flat rings to prevent edge slippage during mechanical loading. Under iso 12625-9, a rigid steel ball advances perpendicular to the tissue surface at a constant velocity until total structural failure occurs. Sensors record peak force applied during penetration alongside total displacement to calculate burst strength and burst energy absorption.
Pre-conditioning tissue samples under standard temperature and relative humidity ensures consistent moisture content across comparative testing series. Testing wet tissue sheets requires controlled immersion timing to evaluate wet strength retention accurately.
Compliance Scope
Standard application limits extend exclusively to tissue paper products and light creped substrates. Compliance under iso 12625-9 provides quality assurance thresholds for tissue toweling and industrial wiping products. Heavy paperboard and corrugated board grades fall outside this method, requiring Mullen burst or pneumatic burst testing standards.
