Production Layout
Geometric arrangement of required roll or sheet widths across the total width of the paper machine to minimize the amount of unused edge material. The paperboard trim profile is a critical output of the scheduling process that determines how much of the manufactured web is discarded as broke. Optimal planning ensures that the maximum amount of the machine capacity is converted into saleable product.
Waste Management
Narrow strips of board removed from the edges during the slitting process are returned to the pulper for recycling. If the paperboard trim profile is poorly optimized, the percentage of side run waste increases, which raises the overall energy and chemical cost per ton of finished product. Sophisticated software calculates the best combination of orders to fill the machine width while meeting the specific delivery dates of the customers.
Efficiency drives profitability.
Operational Constraints
Physical limitations of the slitter and the winder must be considered when designing the layout for each production run. Changes to the paperboard trim profile require stopping the machine or adjusting the knives in real time, which can introduce defects if not managed correctly. A stable and efficient profile reduces the number of reel changes and helps to maintain the consistency of the winding tension across all rolls.
