Permeability Profiling
Evaluation of the rate at which gas or vapor molecules migrate through multi-layered packaging materials over distinct time intervals reveals how barriers perform under changing environmental conditions. This polyphasic permeation analysis tracks the movement of permeants like oxygen or water vapor through both the polymer coatings and the fibrous paperboard core. Unlike static measurements, it distinguishes between the early transient phase of diffusion and the subsequent steady-state flow.
The data generated helps packaging engineers predict how the barrier will behave during long-term storage and distribution.
Measurement Cycle
Testing involves mounting the material sample in a specialized diffusion chamber where the primary face is exposed to a controlled concentration of the permeant gas. High-precision sensors on the receiving side measure the accumulative concentration of the gas as it slowly penetrates the sample. This phase-based tracking reveals the diffusion coefficient of each layer within the composite board, allowing developers to isolate and improve the performance of specific barrier components.
Substrate Evaluation
Multi-layer boards used for chilled foods or sensitive electronics require precise barrier profiling to avoid over-engineering. Analyzing these phase changes ensures that the polymer and board combination provides sufficient resistance without excessive thickness. This reduces polymer use while maintaining product freshness.
