Continuous Web
Processing paperboard from an unwind stand to a rewind stand enables high-efficiency printing, coating, or die-cutting in a single uninterrupted run. This roll to roll converting method is the standard for long-run packaging production where speed and material handling must be optimized. It minimizes the manual handling and slow speeds associated with sheet-fed operations.
Process Integration
Multi-station lines can print, laminate, and die-cut the board in a continuous sequence, which reduces the time needed to complete a job. However, this integration requires precise control of the web tension to prevent registration errors and web breaks. If the board has inconsistent moisture or caliper, the web can wander or stretch, which causes the print to align incorrectly with the die-cutting stations and leads to high amounts of waste.
To prevent this, advanced tension control systems and automated web guides are installed at each station to compensate for minor material variations in real-time.
Production Economy
High-speed web processing reduces the labor costs and increases the throughput of the manufacturing plant. By eliminating the start-and-stop cycles of sheet-fed machines, converters can achieve a much more uniform application of coatings and inks. This continuous process is essential for producing high volumes of uniform packaging boards.
