Substrate Grade
Premium paperboard manufactured entirely from bleached chemical softwood and hardwood pulp offers the highest brightness and cleanest appearance for retail packaging. Known as solid bleached sulfate SBS, this material is the standard choice for luxury cosmetics, chocolate, spirits and pharmaceutical boxes. The absence of unbleached fibers or recycled materials ensures that the board is completely free from odor and taint, which is essential for sensitive consumer goods.
This pristine composition is matched by its high density, which provides an exceptionally clean cutting edge that does not shed fibers during the high-speed die cutting process.
Chemical Processing
Production of this grade involves treating wood chips with chemicals to dissolve the natural lignin, leaving behind high-purity cellulose fibers that are then bleached. This process yields a substrate with excellent strength and stiffness, which allows cartons to resist bulging and retain their crisp edges. The uniform fiber structure also provides superior die cutting and scoring performance, resulting in clean cuts and consistent fold lines.
Surface Finish
The top surface is typically coated with a layer of clay to create a highly receptive substrate for offset and flexographic printing. This coating provides excellent ink holdout and gloss, which ensures that high-resolution graphics and complex brand colors are reproduced with maximum fidelity. This smooth finish also supports special post-print processes such as hot foil stamping and embossing.
