Extraction Methodology
Industrial test methods specify the process of extracting cylindrical core samples from wood pulp rolls or bales to measure dry matter. The standard known as tappi t 210 coring utilizes a rotating hollow drill to extract samples from deep within the compressed fiber. This technique ensures that moisture assessments are not limited to the exposed surfaces of the packaging.
Technical Operation
The testing operator inserts the motorized boring tool perpendicular to the package face at predetermined grid coordinates. Each extracted cylinder of compressed fiber must be placed immediately into a moisture-tight container to prevent evaporation. The depth of the cut must penetrate past the outer layers, which are often affected by storage conditions.
Through the use of tappi t 210 coring, laboratories obtain a complete cross-section of the package moisture profile. This mechanical extraction occurs without damaging the structural integrity of the remaining roll.
Valuation Role
Accuracy in this extraction phase prevents disputes during the invoice adjustment phase of pulp transactions. Since moisture can vary between the outer layers and the center of a roll, surface measurements alone would yield incorrect averages. By relying on this standardized boring method, paper mills and buyers establish a shared, verifiable moisture value.
This prevents claims of weight discrepancy during unloading at the destination mill.
