Standard Environment
Climate-controlled testing protocols specify exact temperature and relative humidity parameters for reproducible physical testing of paper products. Established by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, TAPPI T402 environmental testing defines standard conditioning atmospheres of 23.0 degrees Celsius and 50.0 percent relative humidity for physical paper and paperboard evaluation. The standard ensures consistent material properties across laboratory test sites.
Conditioning Protocol
Paperboard hygroscopic behavior causes physical properties like tensile strength and burst resistance to fluctuate with changing ambient moisture. Specimens must remain in the standard atmosphere for a minimum period, typically twenty-four hours, until moisture equilibrium is achieved. Air circulation within the test chamber must maintain uniform velocity across all sample surfaces.
Pre-conditioning at lower humidity levels, between ten and thirty-five percent relative humidity, prevents hysteresis errors when samples approach final equilibrium from a wet state. Precise sensors record temperature and humidity continuously, as deviations exceeding one degree Celsius or two percent relative humidity invalidate test results.
Quality Assurance
Compliance with standard atmospheres enables direct comparison of paperboard test data across global supply chains. Mill test certificates depend on strict adherence to standard testing conditions during quality control checks. Unconditioned testing leads to inaccurate strength ratings and potential batch rejections.
