Raw Consumption
Sourcing and estimating paperboard requirements for high-volume packaging production requires converting the total area of the required sheets into a precise physical weight. These mathematical models, known as tonnage yield calculations, use the basis weight and sheet size to determine the total weight of the raw material needed to complete a run. Running these calculations ensures that the purchasing department buys the correct volume of substrate without creating excess inventory or running short during production.
Conversion Formula
The formula multiplies the area of a single sheet by the basis weight and the total number of sheets, dividing by a constant to determine the metric tonnage. For example, multiplying the width and length of the sheet in meters by the grams per square meter yields the sheet weight, which is then multiplied by the planned press run. This calculation must also include a percentage to cover standard production waste such as setup sheets and edge trim.
Because paperboards are sold by weight but used by area, this mathematical bridge is the most critical calculation performed by estimating teams prior to committing to a mill order.
Inventory Impact
Accurate weight estimations prevent the accumulation of odd-sized waste sheets that occupy valuable warehouse space and are difficult to use on other projects. They also allow the converter to calculate the correct shipping weights for the finished cartons, which is essential for transport planning and logistics. This precise material tracking directly supports the cost-control measures necessary to maintain profitability in high-volume folding carton production.
