Temperature Regulation
Segmented heating systems allow for independent thermal management across different areas of a large die or platen. With zone heating control, the heated chase is divided into multiple blocks, each with its own sensor and heating element. This allows the operator to apply more heat to areas with heavy foil coverage and less to areas with fine detail.
It prevents the problem of heat soaking from one part of the die into another, which can cause the foil to fill in small gaps.
Thermal Gradient
Maintaining a uniform temperature across a wide format press is difficult because the edges of the machine lose heat faster than the center. Zone heating control compensates for this by boosting the power to the outer zones. This ensures that the dies at the edge of the sheet perform exactly the same as those in the middle.
Without this control, the registration would drift as the metal expanded at different rates across the plate.
Substrate Protection
Excessive heat can damage sensitive coatings or cause the paperboard to become brittle and crack. By limiting the temperature in specific zones, the operator can protect the substrate while still achieving a good foil transfer in other areas. This is particularly useful for jobs that combine large areas of hot foil with delicate unprinted board.
Modern systems use digital interfaces to provide precise, real time adjustments to each zone.
