Standard Specification
Aerobic composting criteria establish laboratory benchmarks for solid material breakdown in municipal and industrial composting facilities without generating ecotoxic residues. Products marketed under astm d6400 must demonstrate that individual polymeric components or finished packaging substrates convert to carbon dioxide, water, and biomass at rates comparable to known compostable substrates such as pure cellulose. The protocol requires that at least ninety percent of the organic carbon converts to carbon dioxide within one hundred and eighty days under controlled thermophilic conditions.
Laboratory verification also sets concentration ceilings on eleven regulated heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium, while demanding that the resulting compost sustains plant growth above ninety percent of control samples in two distinct soil varieties.
Disintegration Metric
Physical breakdown under thermophilic composting requires that finished packaging fragments fall below two millimetres in dimension during a twelve-week exposure cycle. Laboratory screening under astm d6400 evaluates full converted structures, including barrier coatings, print inks, and overprint varnishes, rather than isolated base boards. Coated paperboards with thick synthetic polymer linings frequently pass respirometric gas evolution evaluations yet fail this physical fragmentation threshold when dense polyhydroxyalkanoate or polylactic acid layers remain intact on the mesh screen.
The test isolates mechanical fragmentation failures caused by polymer crosslinking, coating thickness, or board caliper.
Substrate Boundary
Cellulose matrices behave differently than synthetic compostable films because fibrous webs disintegrate rapidly while functional barrier chemistries retard biological access. Certification under astm d6400 does not validate home composting suitability, ambient soil degradation, or aquatic dispersion. Industrial facility conditions maintain operating temperatures above fifty degrees Celsius with controlled moisture levels that do not occur in open environments.
Sourcing paper packaging certified to this specification commits the waste stream to managed commercial composting infrastructure.
