Planarity Corrector
Cylindrical mechanical hardware positioned across a converting web path exerts reverse plastic strain to neutralize curl induced by winding tension, moisture gradients and roll set. Positioned within sheeter infeed zones, coating lines and laminating machinery, a decurling mandrel pulls paper or paperboard over a narrow radius under controlled wrap angles. The physical unit acts directly upon structural residual stress profiles trapped between the inner and outer fibre plies of coiled web stock.
Operations terminate their engagement with the mandrel when processing single-sheet feeds or flat multi-ply substrates displaying zero reel-core curvature.
Deformation Action
Passing paperboard across a static or small-diameter rotating bar forces outer tensile plies into compressive yield while extending compressed core fibres past their elastic threshold. Core set curvature from small-diameter mill cores requires steep penetration depths of the decurling mandrel into the supported web line. Web tension pull forces the sheet against the curved surface, bending the fibre network against its pre-existing radius of curvature to re-align internal ply tension.
High-caliper solid unbleached kraft boards demand larger mandrel radii to prevent ply delamination along the z-axis shear plane. Thin lightweight release liners use sharp stationary bars to overcome tight curl without stretching the paper backing. Fracturing of mineral topcoats occurs when mandrel diameters are adjusted too tightly for heavy coated carton stock.
Converting Threshold
Process lines rely on correct decurler settings to prevent jam-ups across downstream packaging and printing equipment. Excessive penetration induces counter-curl that causes delivery pile jams at the sheeter layboy. Substrates displaying moisture-induced hygroexpansivity curl require environmental relative humidity control rather than mechanical yielding across a rigid mandrel.
Polyethylene-laminated carton stocks require lower bend aggression because the polymeric barrier layer retains viscoelastic memory that pulls the sheet out of true planarity over time. Mechanical bar decurling reaches its physical limit when ply bond strength drops below the transverse shear stress induced by the wrapping radius.
