Out-Of-Plane Loading
Internal mechanical force acting parallel to the cross-sectional plane through the thickness axis of a multi-ply sheet governs core resistance to layer separation during bending deformation. Within paperboard conversion, transverse shear stress develops when outer plies shift against inner core fibres under transverse scoring, folding or web turning operations. This stress vector determines whether multi-layer boxboards maintain structural cohesion or split into isolated plies when passing through processing equipment.
The metric ceases to define mechanical failure once stresses reorient entirely along in-plane machine or cross directions.
Shear Mechanics
Bending a thick paperboard sheet induces opposing axial tension and compression across the face liners, generating intense sliding forces along the internal thickness plane. Transverse shear stress reaches its peak magnitude along the neutral axis of the cross-section, attacking internal fibre-to-fibre bonds within the middle plies. Mechanical refining levels, starch binder additions and wet-end ply bonding directly determine the capacity of the material to withstand this internal shear force.
Inadequate z-directional shear resistance causes uncontrolled internal delamination, which leads to blister defects, board softening and lost panel stiffness in packaging boxes. Converting rules exploit this stress deliberately during creasing by shearing internal plies while leaving the exterior surface liners intact. Uneven cross-directional moisture distributions depress the critical shear yield point, causing premature internal splitting under minimal turning roll friction.
Packaging Failure
Panel rigidity in corrugated boxes and solid bleached board cartons depends on sustained resistance to transverse shear failure. Compressive top-to-bottom pallet loading generates shear stresses across vertical crease lines, causing carton wall collapse if internal ply bonds yield prematurely. High-speed roll laminators induce high shear forces when combining disparate webs under high nip pressures, which tears apart weak inner plies.
Coated recycled board formulations show sensitivity to transverse shear failure due to short, recycled fibre lengths and high ash contents inside middle plies. High transverse shear resistance ensures proper score fold lines form without rupturing top liner layers on automated packaging lines.
