Fibre Composition
Bleached chemical pulps form the primary structural makeup of multi-ply paperboard intended for high-quality packaging. The fbb furnish relies on virgin wood fibres to achieve the necessary stiffness and clean surface appearance required for folding carton production. This configuration excludes recycled content to maintain the mechanical integrity and purity mandated by food contact regulations.
Manufacturers select specific softwood and hardwood ratios to balance the bending resistance against the surface smoothness of the outer plies. Mechanical pulp layers sometimes sit between the outer virgin skins to increase bulk without adding excessive weight.
Processing Tolerance
Precise control over the pulp mixture dictates the ultimate formation and uniformity of the board sheet. Each change in the proportion of long-fibre softwood improves tear strength while increasing the concentration of short-fibre hardwood improves printability and smoothness. Operators adjust the slurry density at the headbox to ensure even fibre distribution across the width of the forming fabric.
Minor deviations in the fbb furnish cause significant fluctuations in the dimensional stability of the board during offset lithography or gravure printing. Consistent consistency remains the primary metric for verifying that the structural properties stay within the commercial limits specified by the end-user.
Performance Constraint
Rigid standards for bending resistance and surface brightness define the success of this fibre blend in the converting sector. A product manufactured with an improper balance of fibre types will fail to fold without cracking or may demonstrate insufficient stiffness for high-speed filling lines. The brightness value of the outer surface often depends on the specific chemical bleaching sequences applied to the hardwood pulp fraction of the furnish.
Moisture content levels inside the finished board must also align with the press room environment to prevent issues with static or sheet feed jamming. A well-constructed fbb furnish governs the physical limits of the carton throughout its entire lifecycle from the conversion stage to the final retail display.
