Recycled Board
Multi-ply paperboard constructed primarily from recovered paper fibres features a white coated top surface and a grey reverse side. The material designated as gd2 chipboard is a grade of duplex board with a basis weight usually exceeding two hundred grams per square metre. It is used for folding cartons where cost is a primary consideration and the grey back is acceptable.
This grade lacks the strength of virgin fibre boards and is more brittle when folded. Despite these limits, it is the standard choice for many retail boxes.
Fibre Composition
Secondary fibres from mixed paper wastes make up the bulk of the internal plies. To improve printing, gd2 chipboard receives a clay coating on its top side. This coating provides a smooth, white surface that accepts offset inks.
The internal recycled plies provide the thickness required for carton stiffness.
Packaging Suitability
Dry food and household goods are typically packed in these economical cartons. Because gd2 chipboard is made from recycled stock, it must be used with a protective barrier if it contains food. The board is prone to releasing mineral oil residues from print inks on the recovered fibres.
This limits its use in direct food contact.
