Geometric Precision
Precise positioning ensures that the overlapping edges of a folded carton meet exactly at the intended bonding point. Consistent glue seam alignment prevents the finished box from becoming skewed or catching on downstream filling equipment. This measurement tracks the deviation between the cut edge of the board and the crease of the adjacent panel.
Misalignment leads to a condition known as fishtailing where the carton is out of square.
Mechanical Control
Folding belts and guide rails apply lateral pressure to the board as it moves through the folder gluer. Proper glue seam alignment depends on the synchronous speed of the top and bottom transport carriers. If one side of the blank moves faster than the other the seam will drift from the vertical axis.
Squaring devices at the end of the compression section can correct minor errors before the adhesive sets.
Quality Standard
Tolerance levels for high speed filling lines often permit less than half a millimetre of variance. Inadequate glue seam alignment causes jams in the erecting stations of a cartoning machine. Routine checks with a digital calliper verify that the gap between the folded panels remains uniform across the entire length of the box.
Stable board moisture helps maintain the intended dimensions during the folding process.
