Temporal Measurement
Dynamic force analysis during a collision event identifies how quickly a material reaches its maximum resistance level. Calculating the impact rise time provides data on the stiffness and energy absorption capacity of protective packaging like honeycomb or corrugated board. The measurement spans from the first contact to the peak of the force-time curve.
Deceleration Profile
Brittle materials exhibit very short intervals because they cannot deform to spread the energy over a longer duration. When impact rise time is extended through the use of soft cushions or air-filled structures, the peak acceleration experienced by the packaged product is reduced. A longer duration indicates that the material is successfully absorbing the kinetic energy through controlled deformation or crushing.
This change in the timing of the force prevents damage to sensitive electronic components that are vulnerable to high forces. Testing rigs use high-speed data acquisition systems to capture these millisecond events with precision. Packaging engineers adjust the flute profile or the material density to hit a target interval that aligns with the fragility of the contents.
Protective Capability
Environmental factors like humidity can soften the fibers and lengthen the interval beyond the design intent. A damp box might show a very slow rise but fail to provide enough total resistance to prevent the product from bottoming out. Monitoring these values across different climates ensures consistent protection.
