Roll Surface
Ink transfer systems in high-speed flexographic printing demand exceptionally durable and precise surfaces to maintain consistent graphic quality over long production runs. Utilizing a laser engraved ceramic roll allows for the creation of millions of microscopic cells that carry precise volumes of ink or coating to the printing plate. This thermal spray coating is applied to a steel or aluminum core and then finished to a mirror-like smoothness before the engraving begins.
The resulting surface resists both the abrasive wear of doctor blades and the chemical action of modern water-based inks.
Cell Formation
Precision laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to melt and vaporize the ceramic material at microscopic scales. This process creates precise cell geometries with highly consistent volumes and depths. Operators can specify the cell count and angle to suit the specific requirements of the paperboard substrate and the required print resolution.
High cell counts are ideal for fine detail, while deeper cells carry the heavier ink volumes needed for solid background colors.
Ink Release
Ceramic surfaces provide superior wear resistance compared to chrome-plated rolls. This longevity minimizes print defects like streaking and fading. Stable cell volumes ensure long-term color consistency during extended production shifts.
