Paper Overlayer
Strategic placement of thin paper overlays behind cutting or embossing dies compensates for localized pressure variations across the platen press surface. In press preparation, make-ready tissue patch-up balances impression force across complex die layouts to deliver uniform cutting and embossing depth. Calibrated tissue layers ranging from twenty to fifty micrometers in thickness build up low areas on the press platen.
Application stops when all cutting rules or die surfaces achieve uniform contact pressure.
Pressure Distribution
Platen deflection and subtle mechanical tolerances across large die plates create micro-variations in cutting force. Press operators place hand-cut tissue patches onto a backing sheet positioned under the cutting plate to raise low pressure zones. Precise patch placement restores uniform impression depth without overloading adjacent areas of the press bed.
Inadequate patch-up leaves uncut paperboard fibers or shallow embossing detail on distant layout positions. Over-patching increases local pressure, damaging cutting rules and causing premature die wear during long runs.
Platen Leveling
Carbon paper impression proofs reveal local pressure variations across the full platen area during initial setup. Dark impressions identify high-pressure zones while faint areas indicate where tissue patch-up is required. Systematic patch application achieves stable cutting register and uniform crease depths across multi-up carton layouts.
Proper leveling extends die life and protects press mechanics from uneven stress distribution.
