Protection Layer
A functional coating or internal treatment designed to prevent the passage of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons constitutes an essential component of modern food packaging. This mineral oil barrier is typically applied to the inside of folding cartons made from recycled paperboard. It acts as a filter that stops the small, volatile molecules found in old printing inks from reaching the food.
Chemical Composition
Common materials used for this purpose include high-density polymers and specialized clays or bio-based resins that create a tortuous path for the oil molecules. The mineral oil barrier must remain flexible enough to withstand the creasing and folding of the carton without developing micro-cracks. Even a small break in the coating can allow a significant amount of vapor to leak through.
Performance Validation
Evaluation of the barrier involves long-term storage tests where the migration of specific marker compounds is tracked using gas chromatography. This process ensures that the mineral oil barrier provides protection throughout the stated shelf life of the food. Regulators in many regions now require evidence that recycled packaging does not transfer harmful substances, making the selection of an effective barrier a primary task for packaging engineers.
