Alignment Precision
The exact positioning of successive ink layers relative to each other and to the physical edges of the substrate determines the sharpness and colour accuracy of the printed image. This offset press registration relies on the mechanical timing of the grippers and the dimensional stability of the paper or board. Small errors result in blurred text and shifted colours that make the packaging appear low quality.
This level of control is what allows for the reproduction of complex skin tones and fine gradients.
Mechanical Control
Side lays and front marks on the feeder unit ensure that every sheet enters the first printing station in the same position. Once the sheet is in the press, the transfer between units must be perfectly synchronized. Any slip or stretch in the material as it passes through the cylinders will ruin the alignment.
Material Variable
Expansion of the board due to the moisture in the fountain solution is a frequent cause of misregistration. If the trailing edge of the sheet grows while the leading edge is held tight, the image will appear longer on subsequent passes. Managing the water balance on the press is as important as the mechanical settings.
