Production Discipline
Systematic inspection procedures verify that printed sheets match physical proofs, target colour profiles, and mechanical folding tolerances throughout a print manufacturing shift. Within cartonboard and commercial print operations, pressroom quality control monitors colour density, registration accuracy, ink drying kinetics, and coating adhesion across every sheet skid. Standard protocols track substrate behavior as moisture and ink tack stresses alter dimensional stability during multi-pass lithographic, gravure, or flexographic printing runs.
This process boundary governs active shop-floor verification up to the release of pallets to post-print converting operations.
Measurement Protocol
Operators pull pull-sheets at scheduled interval counts to inspect printing performance against digital targets. Spectrophotometers read standardized colour bars across the tail edge of the sheet, tracking CIELAB colour coordinates and Delta E deviations to keep variation under 1.5 units from master proofs. Mechanical register marks confirm layer alignment across cyan, magenta, yellow, and black separations under fifty-times magnification loupes.
Densitometers quantify ink film thicknesses to prevent dot gain and ink tracking in delivery stacks. Automated inline cameras continuously scan passing sheets for hickeys, pinholes, streaks, and misregistration down to sub-millimetre thresholds. Rub-resistance testers and tape pull evaluations verify that energy-cured or aqueous varnishes have fully polymerized across ink films.
Substrate Defect
Raw stock irregularities frequently disrupt print quality targets regardless of operator ink adjustments. Surface delamination or picking takes place when the tack of lithographic ink exceeds the surface z-directional tensile strength of paperboard coatings. Sheet curl induced by unbalanced two-sided moisture absorption causes mechanical misfeeding at the front lay guides and induces corner doubling.
Excessive caliper variation alters cylinder impression pressure, producing patchy solids and crushed highlight dots. Dust contamination from rough sheet sheeting deposits loose chalk onto blanket cylinders, requiring wash stops that create colour balance swings.
