Weight Determination
Measurement offsets represent the weight of the central tube and any protective packaging that must be subtracted from the total weight of a roll of paper. Calculating the reel core tare ensures that the buyer is only paying for the actual weight of the paper fibers and coatings. This value is established before the roll is weighed at the mill.
Billing Accuracy
Standards such as the CEPI Trade Customs provide guidelines for how this weight should be handled in commercial invoices. The reel core tare is typically a fixed value based on the type of core used, such as steel or heavy-duty cardboard. This prevents disputes over the net weight of the shipment.
Inventory Management
Precise tracking of these weights allows for better control of material usage in the converting plant. When a roll is used, the weight of the core must be accounted for to ensure the waste calculations are correct. If the reel core tare is not properly recorded, the warehouse records will show a discrepancy between the purchased weight and the consumed weight.
This is particularly important for high-value materials like specialty boards or foils. Modern systems use barcoded labels to store this information for every roll. This data is then scanned directly into the management software.
The weight of the core is often discarded after the paper is consumed.
