Extraction Apparatus
Laboratory testing of packaging materials to determine chemical transfer often requires exposing only the food contact surface to the extracting liquid. A single sided migration cell isolates this specific surface by clamping the packaging material between a metal base and a hollow chamber filled with food simulant. This arrangement prevents the simulant from touching the printed outer side, ensuring that only the inner side is tested.
Operational Procedure
The testing process begins by placing a circular piece of the packaging material into the bottom of the metal housing. Once the sample is secured, the operator fills the chamber with a selected food simulant, such as an ethanol solution, and seals the top to prevent evaporation. The entire assembly is then placed in an oven at a controlled temperature for a specified period, typically ten days at forty degrees Celsius.
After the exposure time, the liquid is poured out for chemical analysis. This step by step method ensures that the extraction is uniform and repeatable across different laboratories, which is necessary for regulatory approval.
Analytical Benefit
This focused extraction prevents the false readings that occur when solvents dissolve inks from the outer printed surface of a carton. If the liquid were allowed to contact the outer side, the resulting chemical analysis would overestimate the actual risk to the consumer. Using a single sided migration cell allows laboratories to obtain accurate data that reflects real world usage where only the inner liner touches the food.
This precision is essential for verifying the performance of protective coatings and functional barrier layers.
