Cut Performance
Edge smoothness and fiber cleanliness at the sheared boundaries of a wound paper roll depend heavily on the precision of the slitting equipment. High slitter knife trim quality prevents the formation of loose fibers, micro-cracks and scalloped margins that could trigger web breaks during subsequent unwinding. Maintaining this standard is a primary requirement for mills supplying high-speed rotary printing plants or automated packaging lines.
Blade Interaction
The cutting mechanism involves two overlapping circular blades, the top slitter and the bottom band, that act like a pair of continuous scissors. These blades must be set with the correct shear angle, overlap and side-force pressure to ensure a clean shear across the moving web. If the slitter knife trim quality declines, it is usually because the blade edges have worn down or the lateral tension between them has dropped.
Operators inspect the sheared edge of the paper under magnification to check for fiber pulling, which is an early sign of blade wear.
Dust Control
Dull blades crush the paper fibers instead of slicing them, creating a large volume of microscopic cellulose debris. This paper dust accumulates on the surface of the web and is carried into the printing press, where it builds up on the rubber blankets and clogs the ink rollers. Regular maintenance and precise positioning of the blades ensure clean, dust-free rolls.
