Liquid Reference
Reference liquids specified for surface energy measurements on low energy polymers ensure consistent evaluation of substrate treat levels. The formulation of standard formamide ethoxyethanol mixtures provides a range of surface tension values used to determine the wet tension of plastic films. These liquids are blended according to standardized recipes to match specific dyne levels, typically ranging from 30 to 56 millinewtons per meter.
Applying these mixtures to a film surface helps operators verify if the substrate is ready for ink or adhesive application.
Testing Application
Drop spread behavior of the mixtures indicates whether the film surface has been sufficiently treated. The operator applies a thin film of the liquid using a draw-down rod or cotton swab and observes the wetting behavior. If the liquid does not draw together into droplets within two seconds, the film surface energy is at least equal to that of the liquid.
This simple test is a standard quality control tool in converting plants.
Calibration Needs
Protecting the mixtures from exposure to air prevents changes in concentration and surface tension due to evaporation. Ethoxyethanol is more volatile than formamide, so open containers will experience a shift in chemical composition. Using fresh test mixtures ensures accurate and reproducible results on the production line.
