Fibre Distribution
Optical irregularities in a substrate surface arise from non-uniform web formation during the paper manufacturing process. Structural line noise refers to these density variations, which occur when fibre orientation deviates from a perfectly random state. These fluctuations create micro-topographies that disrupt ink transfer during high speed gravure or offset printing cycles.
The physical intensity of this interference depends upon the flocculation rate of the pulp suspension upon the wire.
Mechanical Interference
Precise control of headbox pressures limits the formation of streaks that propagate as structural line noise. These streaks occur when the velocity ratio between the jet and the forming fabric fluctuates beyond calibrated thresholds. Rollers in the press section add further pressure inconsistencies that imprint visible patterns across the finished sheet.
Each subsequent coating layer adheres according to these underlying surface contours, which amplifies the visibility of the noise under controlled lighting conditions. Manufacturers quantify this effect by measuring transmission opacity at a microscopic scale to determine the range of density deviations. High variability correlates with poor print quality because the substrate fails to present a uniform surface for pigment reception.
Consistent output requires maintaining steady fluid dynamics within the forming zone of the paper machine.
Conversion Impact
Downstream converting operations encounter severe difficulties when feeding sheets afflicted by extreme structural line noise. Automated inspection cameras interpret these density variations as surface defects, which forces unnecessary machine stoppages. Adjusting suction levels on vacuum transport systems prevents these unstable substrates from slipping during rapid collation.
The resulting friction causes edge wear that degrades the overall integrity of the finished packaging unit. Correcting the sheet geometry through specialized calendering finishes reduces the noise floor, but this process frequently compromises internal bond strength. Structural line noise represents a fixed constraint for designers selecting premium stocks for high density graphics.
