Functional Additive
Engineered silicon dioxide particulates synthesized without crystalline structure serve as matting agents, anti-blocking additives, and ink absorption enhancers in specialty paper coatings. Manufactured via wet precipitation or high-temperature flame hydrolysis, synthetic amorphous silica provides high specific surface area, controlled porosity, and tailored particle size distributions for printing substrates. Coating formulators incorporate this non-hazardous synthetic additive into aqueous receptor layers for high-speed inkjet, gravure, and flexographic paper grades.
The material functions purely as a surface-modifying filler and does not provide wet-strength or structural fiber bonding.
Ink Interaction
Porous silica particles deposited on paperboard surfaces rapidly absorb liquid ink solvents through strong capillary suction while retaining color pigments on the top sheet plane. This selective absorption mechanism accelerates ink drying times, minimizes dot gain, and eliminates color bleed during multi-color printing runs. Print operations achieve deep color saturation, sharp edge definition, and high optical density on both coated paper and corrugated display stock.
Dispersion Threshold
High-shear mixing disperses silica aggregates into aqueous coating slips without breaking down primary particle porosity. Formulators limit additive concentrations below ten percent by dry weight to prevent coating brittleness and excessive slurry viscosity build-up. Proper dispersion stabilizes rheology during high-speed blade and curtain coating applications.
