Surface Durability
Rub resistance defines the mechanical threshold where printed carton surfaces withstand friction without transferring pigment or losing gloss. Folding cartons encounter constant sliding contact against conveyor rails, automated packers and adjacent packages during distribution cycles. Mill-applied aqueous coatings or ultraviolet curable varnishes protect the underlying ink film from this mechanical abrasion.
Low friction coefficients reduce the drag force that causes ink smearing on folding carton blanks. Printers test this property using Sutherland rub testers under fixed load weights for designated stroke counts before releasing production runs to folding lines.
Resistance Parameter
Pigment transfer during carton handling damages brand graphics and fouls filling machinery with loose ink particles. High pigment loads in offset lithography inks increase the tendency toward smearing when cartons rub together in stacking hoppers. Sheetfed offset presses require adequate drying times and proper anti-offset powder applications to prevent premature rubbing failures during subsequent die-cutting operations.
Substrates possessing high surface energy often hold coatings more tenaciously, which directly improves the friction tolerance of finished packaging materials. Converting plants measure optical density loss on receiving blocks to quantify the exact degree of ink removal after a specified cycle count.
Friction Tolerance
Paperboard mills balance ink penetration against surface holdout to maximize both print fidelity and rub resistance on folding boxboard grades. Too much binder absorption leaves pigment particles vulnerable to mechanical shear forces during high speed packaging operations. Applying synthetic sizing agents during wet end processing limits liquid absorption and keeps ink films resting on the smooth board surface.
Converters adjust nip pressures on coating stations to deposit uniform protective layers that shield printed graphics from handling damage. Surface durability determines whether packaging survives distribution networks looking pristine.
