Metering Load
Controlled force applied to the metering blade determines the final thickness of the coating layer on the paper surface. The blade contact pressure regulates how much pigment and binder remains on the substrate after the initial application. It stops being the primary control factor once the blade reaches its elastic limit or when the backing roll deforms.
Application Dynamics
Proper force ensures that the coating fills the surface voids without scratching the base sheet. An operator adjusts the loading to compensate for changes in base paper roughness or coating viscosity. High pressure leads to a thinner coat and potential streaks, while low pressure results in an uneven film.
The interaction between the steel edge and the moving web generates heat that must be managed to maintain blade life. Precise mechanical adjustment prevents the bypassing of excess coating fluid at high speeds. Stable contact ensures that the surface remains receptive to printing inks.
Process Stability
Uniform pressure across the width of the machine prevents moisture variations and curl in the finished reel. Profiling systems use actuators to adjust the load at local points, ensuring that the coat weight stays within half a gram of the target. Stable loading reduces the frequency of breaks on the coating line.
