Substrate Composition
High strength packaging material consisting of a bleached white top layer and an unbleached brown kraft base layer. The coated kraft back grade combines the visual appeal of a smooth printing surface with the superior tear resistance of virgin unbleached softwood fibres. It is frequently selected for beverage carriers and heavy duty retail packaging where structural integrity is a priority.
Structural Integrity
Unbleached kraft pulp provides high tensile strength among common paperboard components. Because coated kraft back utilizes these long fibres, the material can withstand substantial weight without tearing at the handle cutouts or corner folds. This stiffness allows for the use of lower basis weights compared to recycled grades while maintaining the same protective qualities.
High wet strength resins are often added to the base plies to prevent the package from collapsing in refrigerated or humid environments. The orientation of the fibres during the forming process creates a strong grain direction that converters use to optimize the load bearing capacity of the finished box.
Surface Quality
Mineral coatings applied to the top surface ensure that the material accepts high quality offset or flexographic inks. While the reverse side remains the characteristic brown of unbleached pulp, the top surface provides the brightness and smoothness needed for brand graphics. Printers must account for the density of the base when setting tension on the press.
Excellent ink holdout on the top layer contrasts with the functional, industrial nature of the back.
