Structural Modification
Controlled mechanical disruption of a coating layer improves the flexibility and creasing performance of high-barrier packaging materials. When dynamic barrier micro fracturing is applied to a coated substrate, it creates a network of microscopic breaks that prevent large scale cracking during the folding process. This technique preserves the integrity of the barrier against oxygen or moisture.
It allows rigid coatings to behave like flexible films.
Functional Mechanism
Application occurs during the converting stage where the board passes through specialized rollers that induce precise stress patterns. As the material bends, dynamic barrier micro fracturing ensures that the strain is distributed across thousands of tiny points to prevent concentration in a single failure line. This distribution maintains the protective properties of the polymer or mineral layer.
The process is tuned to the specific thickness and brittleness of the barrier. Advanced sensors track the tension in the web to prevent the fractures from penetrating the underlying fiber matrix.
Performance Constraint
Excessive force during the application of this method can compromise the base sheet and lead to a total loss of barrier functionality. The window of operation is narrow. If the fractures are too large, the shelf life of the packaged product decreases because of gas migration.
Monitoring the depth of the mechanical impact requires consistent calibration of the converting equipment.
