Cell Capacity
Engraved metering roll specifications in this category define the ink carrying capacity of the laser engraved cells on a ceramic transfer cylinder. The flexographic anilox volume is measured in billions of cubic microns per square inch or cubic centimetres per square metre. This value directly governs the amount of liquid transfer to the printing plate.
Transfer Rate
Determination of this volume is achieved through liquid volume measurements or three dimensional interferometric microscopy of the roll surface. A roll with high volume deposits a thick layer of ink or coating, which is necessary for solid area coverage or protective varnishing. Low volume rolls are required for fine detail and halftone printing to prevent dot gain and maintain image clarity.
Regular cleaning is necessary to remove dried ink residue from the cells, as blocked cells will reduce the effective transfer volume.
Volume Limit
Ensuring consistent deposition demands that the anilox roll is monitored for wear over its service life. Squeegee blade pressure can wear down the cell walls and decrease the carrying capacity of the roll. This measurement is not applicable to offset lithography or gravure printing systems which use different ink distribution mechanisms.
Correct volume selection prevents both starvation and flooding of the print plate.
