Board Structure
Recycled cartonboard engineered with enhanced thickness per unit weight provides structural rigidity while reducing overall material consumption. Packaging specifications define high-bulk gd2 as a coated white-lined chipboard grade with a grey back that delivers higher caliper than standard recycled grades at equivalent basis weight. Lower fiber density distinguishes this material from traditional recycled folding boxboard options.
Caliper Advantage
Mill manufacturing processes incorporate mechanical pulp or specialized fiber treatment to create a bulkier middle ply structure. Increased caliper delivers higher bending stiffness, allowing package designers to specify lower basis weights without sacrificing carton yield or crush strength. Smooth clay coatings applied to the top surface ensure high print fidelity on offset and flexographic printing presses.
Grey inner plies consist of recovered post-consumer and post-industrial paper fibers, maintaining cost efficiency for secondary packaging applications. Lower density reduces structural weight, decreasing freight costs across distribution networks. Printing operations monitor surface dust and lint levels, as lower-density recycled plies can shed loose particles during high-speed converting.
Converting Limitation
Laboratory tests measure caliper, bending moment, and surface roughness to verify compliance with mill target tolerances. Excessively high bulk can reduce internal bond strength, leading to ply separation during creasing or embossing operations. High-bulk gd2 balances material efficiency and structural performance in commercial folding carton applications.
