Analytical Technique
Analytical spectrometry combining high-temperature inductively coupled argon plasma with mass spectrometry determines ultra-trace elemental concentrations in paper, board, and packaging coatings. The analytical process ionizes sample atoms in an argon plasma discharge operating at temperatures between six thousand and ten thousand kelvin before separating and quantifying ions based on their mass-to-charge ratios. Within packaging compliance workflows, icp ms analysis quantifies heavy metal impurities, inorganic pigment residues, and specific migrant elements at parts-per-billion or parts-per-trillion sensitivity levels.
The method applies to acid-digested cellulose matrices, food simulant extracts, and migration leachates. It does not measure organic compounds, structural polymer chains, or non-ionizable gaseous elements.
Measurement Mechanism
Solid packaging samples undergo closed-vessel microwave-assisted acid digestion using concentrated nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve cellulose fibers and mineral coatings into an aqueous solution. When performing icp ms analysis, the liquid digestate is nebulized into a fine aerosol and swept into the high-temperature plasma torch. Extreme thermal energy dissociates chemical bonds and strips electrons from elemental atoms, generating positively charged ions.
A vacuum interface extracts these ions into an electrostatic lens stack that focuses the ion beam into a quadrupole or time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Quadrupole mass filters rapidly alternate electric fields, allowing only target mass-to-charge ratios to reach the electron multiplier detector. Collision-reaction cell technology injects helium or hydrogen gas to eliminate polyatomic spectral interferences, ensuring accurate detection of lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and antimony.
Quality Verification
Compliance laboratories utilize mass spectrometry to verify that paperboard packaging conforms to packaging waste heavy metal thresholds and food contact purity guidelines. Sourcing departments rely on icp ms analysis to ensure that recycled fiber furnishings do not introduce toxic trace metals into sensitive pharmaceutical or direct food packaging lines. Mill quality teams use the technique to monitor mineral pigment raw materials like kaolin and calcium carbonate for trace element contaminants.
High-precision analytical reports provide defensible documentation for regulatory compliance audits and environmental safety certifications.
