Fibrillar Cellulose Derivative
Advanced biological materials produced by the mechanical breakdown of wood pulp into its constituent nano-scale fibres offer high surface area and strength. Micro-fibrillated cellulose consists of a network of tiny ribbons that can be added to paper furnish or applied as a coating. This material creates a dense, transparent film that provides an excellent barrier against oxygen and grease.
It enhances the mechanical properties of the sheet without significantly increasing the weight.
Manufacturing Mechanism
High-pressure homogenizers or grinders shear the pulp until the cell walls delaminate into individual fibrils. During the production of micro-fibrillated cellulose, the energy input must be carefully managed to achieve the desired degree of refinement. Excessive processing can shorten the fibres too much and reduce their reinforcing potential.
The resulting gel-like substance is then mixed into the paper machine wet end or used in a size press. This additive improves the internal bonding of the sheet and increases the smoothness of the surface.
Commercial Benefit
The use of this material allows for the production of lighter packaging that maintains the same strength as traditional grades. Because micro-fibrillated cellulose is derived from renewable sources, it provides a sustainable alternative to synthetic polymers.
