Z-Direction Strength
The force required to split a paperboard sheet perpendicular to its surface measures the strength of the internal fiber network under a uniform, static tensile load. The laboratory standard defined as tappi t541 internal bond uses two metal platens and double-sided adhesive tape to pull the specimen apart in the z-direction. It reports the force required for failure in kilopascals.
This standard does not measure the shear resistance of the sheet during printing or folding operations, but focuses purely on tensile strength. It is particularly used to test the bond strength of polymer-coated boards.
Static Load
Coating and laminating processes pull the surface of the board during drying and cooling. Under tappi t541 internal bond, the force is applied slowly to measure the true static strength of the bond. This differs from dynamic tests which are sensitive to the speed of impact.
It provides a measure of how the board will behave during foil lamination.
Quality Control
Multi-ply board requires strong bonding between the layers to prevent splitting on the folder-gluer. By running the tappi t541 internal bond test, mills verify that the starch or synthetic polymers used to bond the plies have cured correctly. This verification prevents failures during the converting of heavy-duty boxes.
