Pressure Variance
Mechanical variance describes the deviation in force applied across the width of a crush test assembly. An anvil compression difference indicates that the upper and lower platens are not perfectly parallel or that the load cells record inconsistent resistance during a flat crush or edge crush test. This imbalance leads to uneven loading on corrugated samples.
Precise measurement ensures the tester provides a reliable value for the structural integrity of the finished box.
Board Impact
Fiber failure occurs prematurely when one side of a sample receives higher stress than the other. If an anvil compression difference remains uncorrected, the reported values for short span compression or ring crush will be artificially low. This results in the rejection of batches that meet actual grade specifications.
Operators must monitor the uniformity of the contact area to prevent false negatives in quality control logs. When the platens close, the uneven distribution causes the fluting to buckle at a diagonal rather than collapsing vertically.
Corrective Action
Regular calibration using carbon paper or pressure sensitive films identifies the location of the contact error. Once identified, the anvil compression difference is minimized by adjusting the leveling screws on the base or shim plates. A consistent gap is mandatory for meeting ISO 3037 requirements.
