Bonding Mechanism
Radiation curable polymer chemistry establishes the initial tack required for cold foil adhesive applications on high speed printing lines. Energy transfer from ultraviolet lamps triggers immediate crosslinking of acrylate oligomers and monomers beneath the metallic transfer layer. Presses running at maximum speeds demand fast polymerization rates to prevent cylinder offset during subsequent station passes.
Excess photoinitiator concentrations inhibit complete through cure, leaving a tacky residue that attracts dust on the delivery stack. Substrate porosity influences penetration depth before exposure, so primers or barrier coatings prevent excessive vehicle absorption into paperboard fibres.
Surface Rheology
Viscosity profiles dictate transfer cleanliness across fine graphic details and heavy solid areas alike during inline lamination. Shear thinning behaviour allows the liquid film to level smoothly under fountain roller pressure before the web meets the metalized carrier film. High molecular weight polymers provide the cohesive strength necessary to shear cleanly between the printed image and the waste matrix without feathering edges.
Temperature fluctuations inside the pressroom alter fluid dynamics, requiring viscosity adjustments through glycol additions or thermal management systems. Excessive coat weight creates high peel resistance during stripping, which tears the fragile carrier sheet and shreds the transferred foil deposit.
Lamination Parameters
Nip pressure optimization ensures intimate contact between the substrate surface and the foil web without crushing the underlying paperboard structure. Nip roll hardness ratings measured in durometer units determine the width of the contact zone where polymer wetting occurs. Tension differentials between the unwinding foil roll and the rewinding waste matrix govern registration accuracy on complex multicolour labels and folding cartons.
Subsequent overprinting lacquer compatibility relies on complete surface curing of the underlying bonding agent to prevent intercoat delamination defects during final converting operations.
