Mechanical Adjustment
Measurement and correction of the opening width of a female creasing die ensure repeatable score lines in solid board. In high-precision packaging design, crease channel width calibration maintains the precise relationship between the creasing rule and the groove in the counter die. This standard adjustment accounts for the thickness and compressibility of the substrate, preventing fiber rupture along the fold line.
Calibration Sequence
Determining the correct channel width requires measuring the board thickness and applying a specific multiplier depending on the fiber direction. For cross-direction creases, the groove must be slightly wider than for machine-direction creases to accommodate the greater resistance of the cross-grain fibers. When performing crease channel width calibration, operators utilize a digital micrometer or a specialized optical gauge to verify the slot width at multiple points along the rule.
If the slot is too narrow, the force of the descending rule shears the board, whereas an excessively wide slot creates a weak, undefined hinge that fails during automated gluing.
Run Stability
Regular verification during a production run offsets the gradual wear of the phenolic counter plates. Accurate calibration protects the finished cartons from unsightly cracking and ensures consistent folding torque during high-speed filling.
