Thermal Fixation
Commercial printing relies on thermal fixation during web offset production to dry petroleum-based inks at high line speeds. Heatset web offset units pass continuous paper rolls through gas-fired ovens immediately after image transfer, vaporizing liquid solvents instantly. This targeted drying prevents smearing on high-speed coated stocks used for magazines and catalogues.
Thermal energy drives off hydrocarbon solvents, leaving behind solid resins and pigments bound to the paper surface. Water-cooled chill rolls follow the drying oven to lower web temperature rapidly, solidifying the ink film and restoring moisture lost during baking. Proper tension control through these thermal zones prevents paper distortion and register shifts on lightweight coated substrates.
Energy Recovery
Thermal oxidizers capture VOC emissions generated by ink solvent vaporization inside the drying oven. Exhaust air routes directly into the oxidizer chamber, destroying hydrocarbons at elevated temperatures before atmospheric release. Secondary heat exchangers draw thermal energy from the oxidation process back into the drying oven, reducing overall natural gas consumption.
Printers balance air volume settings to ensure safe solvent concentration levels within the drying enclosure while maintaining thermal efficiency. Condensation control equipment removes moisture from exhaust streams before heat transfer surfaces experience fouling.
Dimensional Stability
Paper webs experience rapid moisture loss when exposed to high oven temperatures during production runs. Moisture content drops from five percent down to two percent or lower within fractions of a second inside the drying tunnel. Specialized dampening units apply moisture back onto the web immediately after chilling to restore original paper dimensions.
This rehydration step prevents edge curling, static buildup, and cracking during subsequent folding and binding operations. Substrate selection dictates the amount of applied moisture, heavier coated papers require precise water volume adjustments to prevent blistering caused by trapped steam beneath the ink film.
