Transfer Sheet
Decorative finishing employs a multi-layered thin film to apply metallic or colored designs to a paperboard surface under heat and pressure. This composite material, called hot stamping foil, typically consists of a carrier film, a release layer, a decorative layer, and an adhesive coat. It allows precise deposition of reflective patterns onto the packaging surface during the embossing or stamping step.
Thermal Release
Thermal activation of the adhesive occurs when a heated die presses the film against the board. This heat melts the wax release layer, which frees the decorative coat from the carrier while the adhesive binds it to the paperboard. A smooth board surface is required for a clean transfer, as surface roughness can cause microscopic gaps in the foil.
Adhesion Quality
Quality control focuses on the release behavior and the sharpness of the foil edges. High press speeds require the release layer to melt and separate quickly without leaving ragged edges or flakes. If the foil fails to detach cleanly, the design will have voids or spread beyond the intended area, which spoils the appearance of the package.
Selecting the correct temperature and dwell time ensures a clean print and avoids costly press adjustments during the run.
