Viscosity Standard
Extrusion mass flow measurements quantify the melt viscosity of thermoplastic resins used in extrusion coating and film blowing operations. Determination of melt flow rate measures the mass of molten polymer extruded through a standard capillary die at specified temperatures and load conditions. High numerical values indicate lower molecular weight resins.
Rheological Behavior
Standardized rheological testing provides practical processing guidance for film converters selecting polymers for specific barrier applications. Measuring melt flow rate under standard piston loads, such as two point one six kilograms at one hundred ninety degrees Celsius for polyethylene, establishes fluid flow characteristics during processing. Low melt index resins exhibit high melt strength essential for stable bubble formation during blown film extrusion, whereas high flow resins suit high-speed extrusion coating onto paperboard substrates.
Polymer chain branching and molecular weight distribution directly alter shear response inside extrusion dies. Deviations in resin flow rates lead to gauge variation and inconsistent heat sealing behavior on pouch packaging lines.
Processing Window
Melt index parameters define processing windows for converting polyolefin resins into uniform packaging films. Comparing flow rates before and after processing reveals thermal degradation or shear-induced polymer breakdown inside extruder barrels. Melt index measurements cannot predict non-linear viscoelastic behavior under high shear rates encountered in narrow die gaps.
