Porosity Distribution
Physical surface chemistry defines the proportion of total internal pore volume in a coating or paper structure that falls within the diameter range between two and fifty nanometers. Material scientists measure the mesopore fraction of pigment coatings to determine ink solvent absorption rates and liquid carrier transport dynamics during commercial printing. The metric quantifies the intermediate void network situated between tiny micropores and larger macropores created by structured pigment packing.
These mid sized voids govern the capillary suction pressure that pulls ink vehicles away from surface pigment layers. The parameter applies strictly to nano scale void volume calculations and does not measure macroscopic air permeability or bulk sheet porosity.
Pore Sizing
Gas physisorption using nitrogen or argon at cryogenic temperatures measures the internal void volume distribution across conditioned substrate samples. Calculating the mesopore fraction involves applying the Barrett Joyner Halenda mathematical model to desorption isotherms recorded during gas pressure reduction. Pigment particle size distributions, blending ratios of calcium carbonate and kaolin clay, and latex binder volumes dictate the resulting void dimensions.
Smaller mesopores generate strong capillary forces that rapidly absorb low viscosity solvents from offset and gravure inks. Excessive binder dosage fills these voids, shifting the distribution toward smaller micropores.
Ink Interaction
High speed printing presses rely on rapid solvent uptake to prevent ink setoff and smearing in the delivery pile. Substrates with an optimal mesopore fraction accelerate the separation of ink oils from pigment particles, enabling crisp dot reproduction and clean edge definition. Coated packaging boards with deficient mesopore volume cause slow ink setting, leading to scuffing and tracking marks on folder gluers.
Synthetic silica and structured clay additives increase intermediate pore volume in specialty inkjet coatings. Controlling void size distribution delivers precise balance between ink holdout and drying speed.
