Tooling Component
A phenolic resin-bonded paper laminate sheet machined with micro-milled female grooves functions as a high-precision counter die for carton creasing operations. Mechanically routed to match the steel rule layout of a cutting die, the channel receives the paperboard substrate as the male creasing rule forces the board down. The pertinax channel replaces conventional paper-based creasing matrix strips, ensuring identical channel dimensions across millions of press impressions on automatic flatbed die-cutters.
The cured phenolic resin material provides exceptional dimensional stability, resisting moisture variations and mechanical compression during long production runs. The application is strictly limited to folding boxboard, micro-flute, and solid bleached sulphate converting, providing zero utility in rotary corrugated slit-scoring or rotary envelope punching.
Milling Precision
Computer numerical control milling machines cut the grooves directly into the laminated base sheet using specialized conical or straight carbide cutters. Channel width correlates directly to paperboard caliper and rule thickness through standard packaging equations, typically calculated by adding the creasing rule thickness to 1.5 times the board thickness. Depth corresponds closely to substrate caliper, providing sufficient clearance for board compaction without bottoming out the steel rule.
Smooth channel walls prevent scuffing the printed surface or cracking the pigment coating layer as the blank seats into the female recess. Positioning pins align the finished counter plate to the die base, matching cutting and creasing profiles across the full sheet format.
Pressroom Longevity
High-speed flatbed autoplaten presses generate significant vibration, cycle shocks, and thermal fluctuations that degrade standard pasteboard counters. The cured phenolic paper composite withstands millions of impacts without widening channel margins or rounding sharp entry edges. Channel consistency preserves uniform crease profiles from the initial pull sheet to the final pallet of a production run.
Stable crease geometries ensure predictable carton folding resistance on downstream high-speed folding gluers and robotic cartoning machinery.
