Converting Process
Reciprocating mechanical press operations convert flat paperboard sheets into precision-cut and creased carton blanks using flat steel rule dies. The converting process platen press die cutting applies uniform vertical force across a sheet positioned between a heavy metal platen and a custom die board. Simultaneous cutting and creasing occur in a single press stroke.
The process scope covers flatbed sheet-fed converting machinery for folding boxboard and corrugated stock.
Mechanical Cycle
Gripper bars transport paperboard sheets into the press bed between upper and lower platen tables. Toggle mechanisms drive the lower platen upward, driving steel cutting rules through the board against hard metal cutting plates. Ejection rubber strips mounted adjacent to steel rules compress during impact, then expand to push the cut sheet off the die.
Nicking steel rules creates tiny uncut bridges that hold individual carton blanks together inside the web during high-speed transport to stripping stations. Tonnage adjustments balance cutting impression depth to ensure clean cuts without dulling rule edges prematurely. Accurate register alignment preserves print-to-cut tolerances required for automated packaging assembly.
Precision Tolerance
Platen tilt or uneven cutting pressure creates incomplete cuts and matrix crushing. Proper platen press die cutting maintains clean board edges and exact carton dimensions.
