Elastomeric Barrier
Polymer film benchmarks for puncture resistance and elongation require synthetic elastomer membranes that maintain structural integrity under severe mechanical deformation. In flexible packaging applications, polyurethane film provides high puncture toughness and abrasion resistance when laminated to paper or secondary polymer webs. The elastomeric network withstands repeated flexing without developing pinholes or micro-cracks.
Thermal stability allows heat sealing operations without degrading membrane structure.
Lamination Interface
Extrusion coating and adhesive lamination attach elastomeric films to paperboard substrates, creating flexible barrier materials for demanding industrial applications. Thermoplastic polyurethane structures combine soft polyol segments that provide elasticity with hard isocyanate segments that deliver mechanical strength. High moisture vapor transmission rates make specific hydrophilic grades suitable for breathable packaging applications, whereas hydrophobic formulations serve as barrier layers against oils and greases.
Paper converting operations combine paper webs with elastomeric membranes using polyurethane reactive adhesives to ensure high bond strength under high moisture conditions. The elastic recovery of the film prevents delamination when laminated structures undergo deep drawing or heavy creasing during carton forming operations. Converting plants adjust web tension control during lamination to prevent film stretching, which would otherwise induce severe board curl after adhesive curing.
Puncture resistance evaluations demonstrate superior performance compared to conventional polyethylene coatings of equal thickness.
Performance Limit
Thermal degradation of the polymer matrix occurs when processing temperatures exceed two hundred degrees Celsius during film extrusion or lamination. Extended UV exposure breaks chemical bonds within aromatic formulations, leading to surface yellowing and loss of tensile elasticity. Aliphatic polymer chemistries are selected when outdoor weatherability and optical clarity are required.
