Migration Calculation

Regulatory bodies assume a standard ratio of six square decimetres of packaging area to one kilogram of food when calculating generic migration limits. If a brand owner reduces the size of a cereal box, the area of board in contact with each gram of cereal increases significantly. This change accelerates the concentration of migrated compounds in the food, which can cause a small package to fail safety limits even if the larger package made from the same paperboard passes.

This calculation must be adjusted for every package size to ensure that the chemical transfer does not exceed the allowed threshold.

Barrier Selection

High-exposure packages require high-performance barrier coatings to prevent volatile compounds from reaching the food. When designing single-serve portions or small snack boxes, the high contact area dictates a more robust barrier polymer than would be necessary for a bulk shipping carton. This geometric metric guides packaging engineers in selecting the correct coating weight to ensure safety across all product sizes.
