Water Removal
Felt conditioning maintains the permeability and drainage capacity of press felts during continuous paper and board manufacturing. High-pressure oscillating water showers dislodge embedded debris and pulp fines from the void volume of the felt matrix. Vacuum suction boxes subsequently extract the liberated moisture and contaminants before the web re-enters the nip.
Without sustained conditioning, felt compaction and plugging restrict water flow from the pressing section, which depresses sheet dryness entering the dryer group.
Fibre Compaction
Hydraulic pressure applied at the press nip gradually compresses the fibrous structure of the felt over operating days. Mechanical fatigue and repeated loading collapse the internal void channels that receive water from the moving paper web. Chemical precipitation from hard water and sizing additives accelerates this void closure by bonding fibers together inside the felt body.
Restoring permeability requires mechanical cleaning methods that penetrate the batt layer without abrading the base fabric structure.
Chemical Cleaning
Alkaline wash cycles emulsify retained pitch and rosin deposits that accumulate within the felt during high-speed packaging production. Acidic flushes dissolve precipitated calcium carbonate and alum scale before mechanical dewatering showers begin their operational sequence. Surfactant formulations reduce surface tension to release stubborn latex and coating binders originating from recycled fiber furnishes.
Precise chemical concentration control prevents localized fiber degradation while maintaining the hydraulic efficiency of the pressing equipment.
